Firearm Storage Information

GOAL: To provide for the safe and secure storage of firearms belonging to students of the University of Idaho.

The Campus division of the Moscow Police Department has agreed to provide storage of firearms belonging to University of Idaho students. It is the desire of the University of Idaho and the Moscow Police Department to make the students property as accessible as possible. With this in mind, the following procedures will be used.

  • All weapons initially checked in must be brought to the Campus Sub-station during normal business hours which are 8 A.M. to 5 P.M. Monday - Friday. Students are encouraged to call 883-7127 to make sure someone will be available to assist them.
  • Students may check their weapons in/out anytime during normal business hours.
  • After normal business hours students will need to call the Moscow Police Department at (208) 882-COPS and the first available officer will meet the student at the Campus Sub-station to check the firearms in/out.
  • All students checking firearms in/out must have a picture identification, and the "Firearms storage card" that they received when they initially checked their firearms in. If the student has lost the "Firearms storage card" they will be given their firearm only if their photo identification signature matches the original signature on the liability form we currently have on file. If it is determined that the person is the legal owner of the firearm, they can have the firearm released to them. They must contact an officer at the Campus Sub-station to have a new card issued to them.
  • University of Idaho rules require all firearms to be encased and have a trigger lock attached.
  • Firearms without a trigger lock attached will not be accepted.
  • Loaded firearms will not be accepted.
  • Ammunition: Ammunition can not be stored at the Campus Sub-station. Ammunition can not be stored in the UI Residence halls at this time.
  • Firearms not encased will not be accepted.

Any questions should be directed to the Campus Division Commander, Lt. Lehmitz at 883-7127.
