The Moscow Planning and Zoning Commission will conduct a public hearing regarding the potential amendment of the Moscow Zoning Code to permit and establish standards for Urban Agriculture activities within the City of Moscow. All interested parties are encouraged to attend the public hearing at 7:30 p.m. on June 12, 2013, in City Hall Council Chambers located at 206 E. Third Street.
Local food production has the potential to provide many health, environmental, and economic benefits to the community and its residents. Currently, the City's zoning code does not adequately address these types of agricultural activities within the city. The proposed amendments would define accessory, community and market gardens and allow these uses within virtually all zoning districts. The amendment would also establish standards for such uses within lower density residential areas to mitigate potential land use conflicts.
The draft ordinance and other materials pertaining to this matter are available on the web at http://www.ci.moscow.id.us/planning/Pages/UrbanAG.aspx or at the Community Development Department offices located at 221 E. Second Street. The proposed amendments are the conclusion of several public input and listening sessions designed to better understand the topic and needs of urban farmers.
