Officer Training

Field Training Officer Program - New Officers

Our Field Training Program is constructed to blend training acquired at the Peace Officer Standards and Training Academy with the commitments and obligations of an officer assigned to patrol duty. The police recruit is assigned to sixteen weeks of extensive training and evaluation by Field Training Officers. The recruits are critiqued daily on their performance in thirty-one divergent fields. The recruit receives hands-on, practical training as well as personal experiences from their training officer. Completion of the Field Training Officer program is a prerequisite for an officer to be awarded their Basic Police Officer Certification and to move to solo patrol.

Officers selected as Field Training Officers are highly motivated and are committed to the five core values of the department: Service, Pride, Integrity, Compassion and Excellence and carry these core values to other officers during and after their training experience.  Their selection is based on their above average knowledge and skills as a police officer and their ability to teach and communicate effectively.

Idaho Peace Officers Standard Training

All POST instructors are police officers, retired police officers or work in a field related to law enforcement.  Successful completion of a POST basic academy or its equivalent is required to be eligible for basic certification.  Lateral police officers who are certified in another state can challenge the POST Academy by completing an online course of instruction and taking a challenge test through an Idaho POST Regional Coordinator.
