Heat Safety

Fireplace

When heating any structure, keep anything that can burn at least three feet away from heating equipment, like the furnace, fireplace, wood stove, or portable space heater. Maintain that space as a kid and pet free zone as well.

For fuel burning space heaters always use the right kind of fuel for heating equipment as specified by the manufacturer. Have equipment professionally installed and inspected annually, Chimneys should be cleaned and inspected every year by a professional as well.

For fireplaces, have a sturdy screen to stop sparks from flying into the room. Ashes should be cool before putting them in a metal container. Keep the container a safe distance away from your home.

And remember, never use your oven to heat your home and turn off portable heaters when leaving the room or going to bed.
