The City of Moscow Human Rights Commission awarded Kay Keskinen the 2019 Ismat Ara and Abdul Mannan Sheikh Community Unity Award on November 14, 2019.

The Ismat Ara and Abdul Mannan Sheikh Community Unity Award is in honor of the memory of two outstanding Moscow citizens, Ismat Ara Sheikh and her husband, Abdul Mannan Sheikh, who demonstrated the meaning of community unity in their personal lives and outreach to the Moscow community.  This was marked in particular with their open invitation to the community to join them for the Thanksgiving meals they hosted for many years in Moscow.  Bestowed biennially, the award is designed to highlight and recognize achievements of a Moscow citizen or group who have made outstanding commitments to community unity, and who have a history of significant effort on behalf of diversity and human rights in Moscow and the surrounding community.

At the event Mayor Lambert cited the nomination of Keskinen by Lysa Salsbury, "While Kay's professional accomplishments are undoubtedly impressive, it is her extensive local and regional community service that makes her truly deserving of this award. Kay is a certified mediator through the Idaho Mediation Association - she is a volunteer mediator for the Latah County Court Assistance Office (small claims cases) and for the Latah County Youth Services Office (victim offender mediation cases). Kay also founded the Palouse Center for Conflict Management, Inc., and continues to serve as president of the board and as a volunteer mediator for that organization. Kay is well known for her work since 2003 with the Friendly Neighbors Senior Organization - she is currently chair of its Continuing Education Committee and manages the four computers in the Moscow Senior Center, including extensive time spent teaching seniors computer navigation skills."
