The Moscow Farmers Market encourages supporters and fans to participate in the 12th annual Farmers Market Celebration hosted by American Farmland Trust. The voting period is open until Tues. Sept. 20, 2020.

The Farmers Market Celebration is a fantastic way for anyone to show their support virtually! Individuals wishing to participate may visit markets.farmland.org/market/moscow-farmers-market/. An endorsement of the market puts it in the running for national recognition and cash prizes. Don’t forget to review the Moscow Farmers Market after voting! This is a chance for participants to share what they have missed, what they are looking forward to next year, and what they have been impressed with despite COVID-19.

American Farmland Trust (AFT) is a national nonprofit dedicated to saving farmland, promoting sound farming practices, and keeping farmers on the land. The Farmers Market Celebration has been held online for 12 consecutive years, elevating the essential role farmers markets play in helping communities access local food and helping farmers connect directly with customers.

“In many regions, especially during these unprecedented times, farmers markets have been vital to keeping existing farms in business and enabling new farms to get started,” said John Piotti, American Farmland Trust president and CEO. “During the coronavirus pandemic, farmers markets have served as essential businesses, helping to connect farmers to customers, and customers to local, healthy food.”

In 2020 it has become clear: America’s farmers markets are more important than ever. Despite a delayed start date and cautious return of all vendors, including farmers, producers, and makers, the Moscow Farmers Market has been able to operate thanks to being identified as an essential business through the Idaho Governor’s office.

To recognize the vital role farmers markets are playing this year, AFT will, in addition to recognizing top markets by region, offer cash prizes for the markets that finish in the top three of the "People’s Choice" category— $1,000 for first, $500 for second and $250 for third. These funds will be awarded to markets for marketing, communications, and other needs that help expand the market’s reach and impact.

The Moscow Farmers Market has consistently been ranked the number one Farmers Market in the state of Idaho for several years. In 2019, it was ranked third for Farmers Market in the Pacific Region. In national rankings, it has regularly broken into the top 25 Farmers Markets.

“We have adjusted our operations like any other Farmers Market that is open during COVID-19. In that respect, we don’t feel we have done anything special to be recognized, but we are rather happy to participate in this event as it brings a sense of normalcy during such turbulent times. We are excited to have our patrons engage in a meaningful and safe way through friendly competition,” said Amanda Argona, City of Moscow Community Events Manager.
