Engineering Intern

Basic Function

Under the direction of the Engineering Manager and Engineering Division team, assist with field and office duties related to Capital Improvement projects.

The Engineering Interns will be exposed to the operation of the Engineering Division and the City by working under the supervision of the Staff Engineering, GIS Coordinator, and with other City staff. 

Distinguishing Characteristics 

The Engineering Interns will interact with other members of the team and may perform other office and field duties. They will receive on-the-job instruction to develop journey-level knowledge of technical engineering principles and practices. To facilitate development, incumbents perform a variety of well-defined technical support activities in the office and field. Incumbents receive instructions about the work to be done, ongoing technical guidance, and their work is reviewed upon completion.

For the summer intern, a minimum of a three-month commitment is required from mid-May to mid-August 2022. Working hours are anticipated to be up to 40 hours per week during that period. The position may extend on a part-time basis during the school year as funding is available. For our Year-Round Intern, a minimum one-year commitment is required. Working hours are anticipated to be 19 hours per week during that period. 

Essential Functions

  • Data input, report generation, and communication/coordination with other departments and the public.
  • Prepare and maintain a variety of records, reports, maps, and exhibits related to engineering activities.
  • Operate other data collection devices.
  • Perform basic CAD and GIS functions.

The Year-Round Intern will work together with our GIS Coordinator as well as other team members:

  • Set up traffic counters at assigned locations, monitor counters daily, data input and report generation, and communicate/coordinate with other departments and the public.
  • Assist with maintenance, organization, and expansion of the Engineering Division historical archives.
  • Prepare and maintain a variety of records, reports, GIS maps, and exhibits related to engineering activities.

The Full-Time Summer Project Intern will work closely with a Staff Engineer and other team members:

  • Assist City inspectors with construction monitoring on various Capital Improvement construction projects.
  • Perform a variety of project support tasks manually or using CAD design including; plan manipulation reducing field notes and revising construction quantities.
  • Assist with a variety of design tasks; produce plans, project specifications, and estimates.   

Supervisory Functions


Education and Experience

  • High school diploma
  • Pursuing a college degree with preferred emphasis in Civil Engineering or Geographic Information Systems  

Licenses and Certifications

Valid Driver’s License


  • Understanding basics of engineering design theory, computations, and techniques.
  • Exposure to computer-aided and manual drafting and plotting techniques.
  • Microsoft Office software (Word, Excel, etc.).
  • Geometry and math principals.
  • Construction materials, quantity computations, and testing techniques.
  • Research and record-keeping techniques.
  • Prepare charts, maps, plans, and profiles.
  • Communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
  • Work cooperatively with others at all times.
  • Maintain records and prepare reports.

Physical Demands
