Basic Function
This position’s primary responsibility is to safeguard the lives of individuals in the entire enclosed pool area and prevent accidents through knowledge of lifesaving, proper use of equipment, and awareness of responsibility. Other duties will include assisting in the overall operation of the pool facility, maintenance and cleaning as necessary, and other duties assigned by a supervisor. This full-time/part-time temporary summer position will assist in operations of the facility with other full-time/part-time temporary guard staff, and reports directly to the manager or head guard on duty.
Essential Functions
Guard as assigned in a conscientious and consistent manner while attempting to improve the quality of aquatic program as a whole.
Safeguard the lives of individuals in the entire enclosed pool area and prevent accidents through knowledge of lifesaving, proper use of equipment, and awareness of responsibility.
Completion of in-service training/training material for aquatic positions.
Respond quickly, effectively, and efficiently to all emergency situations.
Communicate with other lifeguards, the management, and the general public.
To report fully all accidents/concerns involving any aspect of the facility to the manager on duty.
Process incident reports.
Anticipate and prevent accidents.
Performs other related duties as assigned.
Maintenance and cleaning as required.
Competencies
Water safety procedures and lifesaving techniques. (American Red Cross preferred, other certifications of equivalent standards may be accepted).
Interact with general public
Enforce regulations in a fair, impartial, and polite manner
Deal with staff and public in a professional, team oriented manner
Work cooperatively with others
Required Education and Experience
Experience guarding highly desirable.
Experience interacting with public highly desirable.
Current American Red Cross First Aid/CPR for the Professional Rescuer and Lifeguard training are required (other certifications of equivalent standards may be accepted).
American Red Cross WSI highly desirable.
Work Environment
Work is performed in an indoor and outdoor environment where there is exposure to extreme discomforts and unpleasantness. Will be required to use protective eyewear and sunscreen.
Working involves extreme risk and discomfort while outdoors without shelter.
Work is performed in extremes of hot and cold and areas of work may be uncomfortable, wet, and noisy.
Working varied hours including weekends, evenings and holidays.
