This position provides for two levels of education, experience, and responsibility. The Paralegal level requires higher education and experience and provide for more responsibility and authority in essential duties of the position, where the Legal Assistant level provide a lower requirement for education and experience and a lower level of responsibility and authority in essential duties of the position.
Paralegal
This is a paraprofessional level position that requires legal assistance to the City Attorney and the City’s Legal Department. Work involves performing specifically delegated substantive legal work for which a lawyer is responsible, including, but is not limited to, performing legal research, assembling documentation for legal requests and cases; preparing briefs, pleadings, and other legal documents; filing documents with the court system; conducting an initial assessment of public record requests routed to the Legal Department and drafting responses for City Attorney review, and conducting electronic case management.
Legal Assistant
Under the direction of the City Attorney, perform a variety of secretarial and administrative duties to support office operations and activities, including legal secretarial work for civil and criminal matters; plan and perform administrative office coordination to assure smooth, timely, and efficient office operations for the department; assist in the coordination of department services and activities; research, collect, analyze and compile data and information for inclusion in reports; maintain financial records, files, and budgets related to departmental operations, programs and expenditures.
