The City of Moscow Water Reclamation Conveyance (WRC) will be
smoke testing the sanitary sewer lines as part of continuing effort to provide
a safe, economical and environmentally sound sewer system. Smoke Testing
procedures have been used for over 40 years in municipalities throughout the country and are
recommended by the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) as an
effective means of identifying potential problem areas in a sewer system. The
results from smoke testing will help us locate any sewer line breaks or defects
and also help us identify locations where storm water unnecessarily enters the
sanitary sewer system. The “smoke” is not true smoke, but rather a mist containing a large
percentage of atmospheric moisture that is highly visible at low
concentrations. It is not harmful, but those with respiratory problems
such as asthma, emphysema, or other respiratory conditions, should avoid
contact with the smoke. To
minimize the chance of smoke entering your home or business please pour water
into all drains, including floor drains and clothes washer drains. The water
caught in the trap creates a barrier the smoke cannot pass through. In unlikely
event that you do find the presence of smoke in your home or business, open windows to ventilate and
report it immediately. A door hanger will be
placed by WRC field crew members on locations within the smoke testing areas.
