[ARCHIVED] Snow Pushback and Snow Gate Operations

A snow gate operates on heavy equipment

Once city streets have been plowed and are navigable, we begin the process of pushing back snow to widen the available roadway. Our staff uses specially equipped heavy equipment (in this case a grader) to push snow to the curb. We also utilize snow gates in an effort to minimize accumulations at driveways and mailboxes.

Snow gates are far from precision pieces of equipment, and there are a number of factors that can influence the operator’s ability to minimize the berm including fire hydrants, adjacent sidewalks, street-parked vehicles, proximity to intersections, and other obstacles. The snow gates are actually not a widely used tool, as they are very time consuming, and difficult to operate. Most entities in the country simply plow indiscriminately to the side of the road, leaving those residents responsible for moving any snow to accommodate their mailboxes and driveways. Moscow tries to help in this process with the snow gates, but we simply cannot guarantee any sort of lack of accumulation, especially during periods of continual low temperatures and accumulating snow.
