City of Moscow Arts Calls for Art

Moscow Arts Installations & Events

Hello, Artists and Art Lovers -

2020 is a good news/bad news kind of year. Let's get the bad news out of the way -- as many of you probably know, Moscow City Council voted to cancel Artwalk 2020 during their meeting on June 15. This decision was in alignment with staff recommendations and was made in an effort to protect public health and safety. All involved in the decision-making process were reluctant to forego one of Moscow's favorite summer events, but 2020 has prompted many difficult decisions such as this one.

While it is disappointing that conditions won't allow us to host Artwalk, there are a lot of arts-related happenings to look forward to in 2020. Please keep an eye out for the good stuff to come!

Public Art Installations
Jennifer Corio and Dave Frei are set to install their artwork entitled The Homecoming at C & Main Streets in July. This art installation will add beauty to the north end of town, and luckily, it coincides with a sidewalk and landscaping project in the same location.

Six new artworks were recently chosen for installation on traffic signal boxes throughout the City, and they will be installed in the coming weeks. Stay on the lookout for new art popping up all over town, and follow the City of Moscow Facebook page to see profiles of Moscow's public artists.

Third Street Gallery
The Third Street Gallery is currently featuring artworks by Shanti Norman's Moscow Middle School students in an online exhibition entitled Connections. The works reveal the students' exploration of timely topics including connections to self, family, friends, and community. The physical Gallery space inside City Hall will reopen in August with Starburst, an exhibition of paintings by Kevin and Janet Rhodes. The cheerful language of color, line, and shape is prominent in these works, making this exhibition a perfect antidote to the challenges of 2020. Starburst will be on view from September 4 through December 4.

Palouse Plein Air
Who knew there was an artmaking medium perfectly designed for social distancing? Well, it turns out there is one -- plein air painting! And really, what better way to spend an autumn day than painting outside? Palouse Plein Air is set to go forward from September 11-18, pandemic or no. We'll make it safe and fun for everyone, and registration is open now via this link: https://moscowarts.submittable.com/submit

Mayor's Arts Awards
One thing that's definitely not cancelled this year is expressing appreciation for local artists and arts supporters. The City of Moscow and the Moscow Arts Commission will open the nomination process for the Mayor's Arts Awards soon. This event only comes around every two years, so start thinking now about who you'd like to nominate. Also, the nomination process is moving to an all-online format this year, so stay tuned for more information about this new and improved system.

Thank you all for your continued enthusiasm for the arts in Moscow!

The mission of the Moscow Arts Commission is to enrich the community by celebrating and cultivating the expression of all art forms and culture.
