Palouse Plein Air 2021Registration closes September 8 at 5 p.m.
Palouse Plein Air is an annual painting competition that takes place every September, with events including painting workshops and a juried exhibition at Moscow’s Prichard Art Gallery.
Historic Moscow, Idaho and the beautiful Palouse are the perfect destination for plein air artists, and the annual Palouse Plein Air painting event connects artists with the region’s landscape and arts culture. French for “open air,” the phrase “plein air” (pronounced plen-air) describes the act of painting outdoors. The outdoor experience on the Palouse is particularly rich, as its rolling hills, rivers, mountains, fields, farms, and homes tell the long history of the landscape. This year’s event will be juried by Jared Shear.

Sculpted Spaces, Wild LivesRegistration closes September 10 at 5 p.m.The Third Street Gallery invites artwork submissions for Sculpted Spaces, Wild Lives, a complementary pair of exhibitions that address intentionally-shaped spaces and the wild lives that inhabit them. Artworks should address one or both of the following themes:
Sculpted Spaces Humans shape spaces for the purposes of living and working. Far from being a simply mechanical act, the design of architecture and landscape function at the intersection of aesthetic and utilitarian purpose. These spaces define the volumes of air occupied by the human body, whether they be clean-lined, geometric, curving, flat, or soaring vertical structures. Artworks should address this theme in either a literal or abstract sense. Submissions could be inclusive of architectural renderings and landscape designs; three-dimensional models or sculptures; and photographs, drawings, paintings, or prints depicting the appearance or sensation of intentionally-shaped spaces. Wild Lives Humans may create geometric structures for living and working, but craving connection to organic or animal nature, they seek immersion in the wilderness. Animalistic energy is sometimes associated with a lack of culture, control, or sophistication, but this exhibition highlights the raw dignity and resilience of the wild. Artworks may feature subject matter or content related to wildlife or wild lives, and should reflect the unboundedness, instinct, and feral grace of the undomesticated. The exhibition will be juried by artist and University of Idaho Associate Professor Stacy Isenbarger.

Andrew Becker Memorial Sculpture RFPSubmission Period closes October 1 at 5 p.m.The City of Moscow and the Moscow Arts Commission invite artists and artist teams to submit proposals for a permanent sculptural installation at the Intermodal Transit Center Sculpture Garden. This artwork will be a memorial to Andrew Thatcher Becker, a longtime Moscow resident whose advocacy for people with disabilities greatly impacted the community. Accessibility, communication, compassion, understanding, and courage were watchwords for Becker, whose spirit of inclusion infused all of his work in Moscow. After studying political science at the University of Idaho, Becker pursued activism in many forms, including teaching as well as advocacy for human rights and the rights of people with disabilities. Becker shared energy with his community at Milestone Decisions and in service to the Moscow Human Rights Task Force, City of Moscow Human Rights Commission, and the Mobility Task Force. Artists are invited to propose an artwork that expresses Andrew Becker’s core beliefs in the dignity of all people, the equity of accessible communities, and the value of pathways both literal and figurative: smooth sidewalks to travel or communications that connect people to one another. The Intermodal Transit Center, with its proximity to the Paradise Path and its focus on multi-modal access, is the perfect place to celebrate Becker’s life and spirit.
